With the role of leader of any kind, whether titled Team Leader, Supervisor, Manager, CEO or Director etc, there comes a very important responsibility.
A responsibility to remember people are people. They are not robots.
Across a multitude of industries there has been an intensity to the pressure and stress in the last 12 months never seen before. Every leader has a responsibility to their team to upskill themselves to better understand the people on their team.
Stories of fatigue, burnout, exhaustion and mental health challenges are very real.
There are no excuses for hiding behind the screen and being a keyboard warrior. That’s not the way to lead a team and run a department, business or organisation.
Leadership is exhausting, hard work and ever-consuming. It takes guts and there is very limited glory.
If you said yes to the role, then you said yes to the people responsibility.
Just because you were perhaps the ‘oldest and/or the most technically experienced’ doesn’t make you automatically great at the people part.
Leadership is people, it’s all about the people. Understanding what makes them tick, why they do what they do, how to motivate, inspire and lead them.
If you don’t know enough about that, get learning!
Some of the leadership approaches that don’t work are judge, controller, hyper-achiever, avoider, people-pleaser, hyper-rational, restless or stickler. It’s damaging both for you and for those around you, those you lead and/or influence is some way, shape or form.
Some of the sabotaging behaviours with these:
Avoidance; hide behind the computer and not tackle the big and important issues (conversations or decisions).
Hyper Achievement; have the bar set so high no one can live up to expectations, do or be enough.
Stickler; no one can get things right or do it the right way, nothing is ever perfect enough.
Controller; has to have the last say, pull the puppet strings and keep control of conversations and situations.
If a team has any one of these particular 4 sabotage strategies above in leadership – it’s tough going for all concerned. It will be impacting well-being, team dynamics, decision-making, productivity, problem-solving and culture.
